Charlton Athletic Women 0-4 Liverpool Women
Charlton were given a harsh welcome to life in the WSL on Sunday as clinical Liverpool ran out comfortable 4-0 winners at The Valley in front of Charlton’s biggest ever opening game home crowd,
The visitors started the better and took the lead in the 8th minute. A short corner worked it’s way to Cornelia Kopacs who’s dipping cross was palmed away from under her bar by Sophie Whitehouse but it fell right to Grace Fisk who had the simple task of putting the ball into the net.
Charlton grew into the game as the first half went on and did have their moments in attack. Jodie Hutton putting in some tremendous crosses but Liverpool defended them well. One such cross made its way across to Ellie Mason but she was unable to find the target.
At the other end Whitehouse made a brilliant double save from Beata Olsson. First she saved Olsson’s initial header and then she blocked her follow up shot to keep Charlton in the game.
HALF TIME CHARLTON 0-1 LIVERPOOL
The second half began in the same way, with Liverpool on top early and, just like in the first half, they were rewarded with an early goal. Great work from Vivian Endemann saw her drive into the Charlton box and her cross was cutback to the edge of the area where Fisk was on hand to side foot a lovely curling shot into the top corner in the 52nd minute.
With the cushion of that second goal, Liverpool began to dominate and made it 3-0 ten minutes later. Endemann, who was a constant threat down Liverpool’s right, again drive into the box but lost possession. The ball fell to Sam Kerr who’s shot from the edge of the area was well blocked by Kiera Skeels but the rebound fell to Endemann who smashed the ball home from 12 yard’s giving Whitehouse no chance.
In the final minute of added time Liverpool were awarded a penalty after Ashleigh Neville was adjudged to have tripped Natalia Ramos. Replays showed not much, if any, contact so it’s a harsh one for me. Kapocs sent Whitehouse the wrong way to make it 4-0 and complete the scoring.
