Everton Women 1-0 Charlton Athletic Women

The old saying “if it wasn’t for bad luck, I’d have no luck at all” seems very appropriate to Charlton as they were narrowly beaten by Everton 1-0 at Goodison Park on Sunday in only the second game in WSL history that ended with neither side registering a shot on target.

Everton started the better, enjoying the early possession but Charlton defended well and didn’t allow them to create anything.

The first chance of the game came for the hosts in the 11th minute. A free kick from Hikaru Kitagawa came in from the right and, despite having 4 Charlton defenders around her, Hannah Silcock rose highest but couldn’t direct her header on target.

Charlton’s first chance came in the 20th minute. A long ball from Jodie Hutton gets headed away only as far as Ash Neville who, from 30 yards out, hits a first time shot that swerved and dipped and had Courtney Brosnan scrambling backwards but, unfortunately for Ash & Charlton, the ball comes back off the crossbar. In fairness to Brosnan she did also struggle to follow the balls flightpath due to the sun.

Charlton, much like last week, grew into the game as the first half went on. They had another great chance to open the scoring in the 37th minute. A free kick from Hutton is headed back across the 6 yard box by Neville and Elisha N’Dow just couldn’t quite direct her header and the ball went narrowly wide.

HALF TIME EVERTON 0-0 CHARLTON ATHLETIC

The second half began with Everton again enjoying more of the ball but neither side created any clear cut chances.

The main talking point of the afternoon came in the 58th minute as Charlton were reduced to 10 players. A ball played towards Ruby Mace saw her and Neville contest the ball and Ruby got their first and was caught by Ash. Whilst her foot was high, replays showed that the main contact between the two players was hip to hip but referee Alice Parker showed the Charlton defender a straight red card. I can see why it was given but, having seen a replay, it looked harsh to me.

Charlton understandably went defensive after the sending off and, for the most part kept Everton at bay fairly comfortably.

The breakthrough came for Everton in the 77th minute. Ruby Mace got the ball down Everton’s right and beat her defender and put in a cross that looked like Sophie Whitehouse had covered but, the ball deflected off the unfortunate Leighanne Robe and into the net.

Charlton tried to find a way back into the game but Everton were able to cope very comfortably.

Things went from bad to worse for Charlton in stoppage time. Hawa Cissoko, on as a second half substitute, was also shown a red card after two quick bookings. First she was booked for pulling down Holly McNamara in 90+1 minute. Then, just two minutes later, a second yellow & subsequent red followed after a challenge from behind again on McNamara. No complaints about this red card as both challenges were yellow card offences.

Overall a much better performance and I feel we deserved a draw as neither side did enough to win the game. More positives for us to take and we continue to learn and adapt to this level. We just need to be a bit more clinical in the final third and have that little bit of luck too!
